Helen Dalton MP INDEPENDENT MEMBER FOR MURRAY This month I travelled to Canberra to stand shoulder to shoulder with farmers from across Australia to attend the NFF's protest on the steps of parliament house. Our united message was that enough is enough. We want the federal government to listen to us and stop making policy decisions on issues of which they have absolutely no comprehension. The rally wasn't about irrigators versus the environment, it was about common sense versus lack of common sense. It was about measuring water use instead of hiding it and protecting Australia's food bowl verses importing everything we eat and drink. We know that water buybacks will devastate rural communities and economies. We do need to protect our environment and maintain a healthy river system. That's exactly why we need to keep water in our communities to produce food and fibre. The plan is destroying communities. So-called environmental flows are causing untold damage by flooding our river banks, destroying native animals breeding habitat and preventing farmers from finishing their crops and growing the fodder needed to feed their animals. Federal Labor's Green water policies and their agenda will crush our rural irrigation communities. Remember 80% of the States food comes from the southern connected system. $300 million dollars in compensation to those communities is a joke when you compare it to the billions of dollars that will be lost when they take our water. There is a petition circulating throughout the community that will allow me to continue this fight in parliament to stop the transfer of NSW irrigation water to the commonwealth. You can find it on my website and Facebook page, please print and sign it and send it back to my office in Griffith.
