Helen Dalton MP INDEPENDENT MEMBER FOR MURRAY MEA NSW As you know, I am always banging on about water. Well, this month in Parliament I kept up my campaign of water torturing the Minns government by giving them a solid solution to water buybacks. Not only can the Premier Chris Minns solve the NSW water crisis with me but the NSW government could also get a massive cash injection that doesn't cripple our irrigated agriculture or devastate communities and economy. - Let's be clear I do not support buybacks, but if they are going to happen regardless of our position, then here's what should happen. The NSW government currently owns around 770 gigalitres of water entitlements. They've acquired this water by taking 15% of the water that irrigators buy. That's like buying a slab of beer and then the government takes four cans out before you take it home. Premier Minns has 3.6 billion reasons to sell NSW government water to the Commonwealth. Let's say Victoria and NSW both do the same thing, meaning they each sell 225 gigalitres of their water. At $16,000 a megalitre, which is actually under the going rate offered by the Commonwealth, New South Wales will be $3.6 billion dollars better off. It also means the Commonwealth would stop targeting irrigators as part of its destructive buyback policy that is designed to please the Greens and South Australia in a desperate grab for votes. The Commonwealth would have its 450 gigalitres. Imagine what the NSW government could do with an extra $3.6 billion. That money could be spent in rural communities that have been neglected for decades. The NSW government should sell the water it owns, and in doing so, fix this problem once and for all.
