Advertisement Helen Dalton MP INDEPENDENT MEMBER FOR MURRAY PARE MEN NSW This week in parliament I am continuing my "water torture campaign" on the Minns government. It is critical for the survival of irrigated agriculture that current Water Sharing Plans be extended until the Murray Darling Basin Plan review is completed, and extensive consultation undertaken. The accounting methods the government uses to identifying its water holdings is beyond creative. There are so many definitions, so many ambiguous ways government held water licences are used, that not even the government knows exactly how much water they have, and how they can actually use it. I've dived deep into the Water Sharing Plan smoke and mirrors magic show. Going through all available records on government websites it is impossible to not only account for the water they have, but even accurately find and define it. The government is hiding behind bureaucrats to avoid any accountability. I cannot emphasise enough how an urgent review into water transparency, accountability and management is needed. The government must take responsibility and come clean about their water interests and take water management seriously before irrigation communities are ruined. They need to shine a light on our most precious natural resource if they want farmers to keep farming and putting food on our tables. We know what the alternative to that is. Inferior quality, cheap imported food and higher prices for what is left of Aussie grown products. Authorised by Helen Dalton MP, Funded using Parliamentary Entitlements.
